How to get a TikTok video or account removed

A TikTok report succeeds or fails on the policy line you file it under. The order of work: the record, in-app route against web forms, the rules that produce a deletion, the Digital Services Act notice and appeal in the EU, the UK and US positions, and search removal.

ABSTRACT

Most refused reports use the wrong heading. The strongest for a private individual are image-based sexual abuse, the likeness rule in the AI content policy, doxing, impersonation and youth safety. A weaker claim buys a visibility cut, not a deletion.

Every rule, form and deadline below was checked on its primary source on the date shown: the TikTok Community Guidelines effective 24 September 2026, the TikTok Intellectual Property Policy and EEA Terms, EUR-Lex, the European Commission, Ofcom and Google Search Help.

01Removal or only a visibility cut

Removal deletes the post and kills the URL. The other outcome is a visibility cut, which TikTok calls being made ineligible for the FYF, the For You feed. Its eligibility standards say people may still find such a video through search or the creator account.

OutcomeEffectStill reachable

Account banAccount and linked ones closedNo
Worth knowing

Sharing graphic imagery of adult sexual abuse, including image-based abuse, is a severe violation under the Accounts and Features rules: one incident can end the account.

02Build the record first

Posts are renamed and reuploaded fast. A report filed from memory cannot be escalated or taken to a dispute body: neither works without the URL and the date.

Per video, before filing

  • Full post URL, with handle and numeric video ID.
  • Posting account: display name, username, profile URL.
  • Date, time and time zone of capture.
  • Screenshot of the whole screen, caption and hashtags.
  • The sound title, which finds Duets and Stitches later.
  • View and share counts at capture.
  • Proof you are depicted, sent only on request.
Do not

Do not contact the uploader, and do not download or forward intimate material to prove a point. Where the person depicted was under 18, holding or sending the file can create criminal exposure for you.

03In-app report or web form

The Enforcement guidelines say a breach can be reported in the app or on the website, through the report hub. In-app is fastest; web forms take a signed statement, need no account, and leave correspondence you can quote.

04The lines that get content down

Use TikTok wording. The Safety and Civility guidelines define image-based sexual abuse as having, sharing or creating intimate images, real or edited, without consent, and add that content may be shared without consent even where it looks taken with it.

  • Sextortion: threatening to share nude or sexual content to demand money, sex or more content.
  • Doxing: publishing personal information with malicious intent, judged from captions and hashtags.
  • Sexual harassment, which expressly covers mimicking sexual acts using a Duet.
  • Youth Safety, covering any clip from abuse material even without nudity.
  • Impersonation: posing as a real person with no fan or parody label in the display name.

Where the complaint is nudity alone, the line sits in Sensitive and Mature Themes, applied with regional variation, and age restriction is the likely outcome.

05Deepfake and likeness claims

Face-swapped and voice-cloned video falls under Integrity and Authenticity, which requires creators to label AI-generated or significantly edited content showing realistic people, and says unlabeled content may be removed, restricted or labeled.

The decisive line is shorter. TikTok prohibits using the likeness of private figures without consent and bars AI likenesses made to harass. If the video is sexual and synthetic, cite image-based sexual abuse first: that definition already covers edited images.

06The privacy and IP webforms

TikTok treats an image or audio likeness as moderate risk personal information, and an address or payment details as high risk. Moderate risk removal generally needs context showing distress, so say what the exposure is doing. The route is the privacy report form, also named for an intimate privacy violation.

If the footage is yours, the Copyright Infringement Report adds what no other route has: under the Intellectual Property Policy you may ask TikTok to block future copies, and where it removes the video on your report it says it will use best efforts to stop that video returning.

Caution

A knowingly false copyright notice can create liability under section 512(f) of the US DMCA. TikTok also states it may forward an appeal, with contact details, to the original reporter.

07Notice and action in the EU

The Digital Services Act has applied to all platforms in the EU since 17 February 2024. Its notice and action mechanism, Article 16, requires hosting providers to run mechanisms that are easily accessible and user-friendly, to act on notices in a timely manner, and to tell the notifier without undue delay.

TikTok names the route in its EEA Terms of Service: report illegal content through the platform functions or the illegal content form. Name the law broken and the country it comes from, give the URL and date, and keep the reasoned decision.

No fixed clock

The DSA sets no fixed number of hours for an ordinary notice. It requires timeliness, not a deadline. A promised DSA-mandated 24-hour removal is not in the Regulation.

08Appeal and the dispute body

Three steps in order. The internal complaint must stay open at least six months from the day you were told of the decision, and TikTok handles appeals in the in-app Safety Center. Then out-of-court dispute settlement: Digital Services Coordinators certify bodies EU-wide, and of those on the Commission list two cover TikTok content decisions, Appeals Centre Europe and User Rights. Then the courts.

PointPosition
CostNo user fee at Appeals Centre Europe; the platform pays if the body rules for you
BindingNo. Bodies cannot impose a settlement; platforms must engage in good faith
Time limitA removal decision from the last 180 days; none if the content is still up
ExcludedImpersonation and copyright claims, and users outside the EU

09The UK and US positions

The UK has no notice you can serve. Duties under the Online Safety Act 2023 are owed to Ofcom, which states that in-scope services had to finish illegal harms risk assessments by 16 March 2025 and apply safety measures from 17 March 2025, must make reporting functions easy to find and act on them, and must take down non-consensual intimate images once aware. Sharing or threatening to share an intimate image is also an offence under section 66B of the Sexual Offences Act 2003, in force since 31 January 2024.

In the US the TAKE IT DOWN Act, Public Law 119-12, gives a deadline. On a valid request a covered platform must remove the depiction within 48 hours and make reasonable efforts to remove known identical copies. The request must be written and signed, locate the depiction, state a good-faith belief that it is non-consensual and give contact details. The Federal Trade Commission enforces.

10Reposts, Duets and Stitches

Deleting the original does not delete what grew from it. A Duet and a Stitch are separate posts by other accounts, with their own URLs and moderation decisions.

  1. Search the sound of the original; derivatives usually keep it when the caption changes.
  2. Search the caption words and hashtags you recorded, not only your name.
  3. Check the uploader profile for a second account; TikTok bars spreading violative content across accounts.
  4. Report each copy under the same policy line and quote the earlier case reference.
Hash blocking

TikTok is an industry partner of StopNCII.org, which states partners receive its cases and hashes. A hash acts on copies you have never seen.

11Removing the URL from Google

A TikTok video can be indexed by Google Search, and the result outlives the post. Google runs a policy for involuntary fake or real sexual imagery, covering real intimate content, Deepfake material you are identifiable in, and pages tying your name to unrelated pornographic sites.

  1. File under the involuntary imagery policy, which says Google does its best to remove duplicates. List every URL; only what you submit is reviewed.
  2. For exposed data such as an address, use the personal information routes: a standard request, Results about you, or a doxxing report.
  3. Where TikTok has deleted the post but the result persists, use Refresh Outdated Content.
Limit

Google states it can only remove content from search results pages, not the hosting site, and that removal may be partial: the page then stops appearing only for searches with your name.

Frequently asked questions

Why was my report closed with no action?

Usually the heading was weak. A nudity complaint can end in age restriction; the same video, reported as image-based sexual abuse, meets a removal rule.

The video is up but gets no views. Why?

That is a visibility cut, not a removal. TikTok calls it ineligible for the FYF, and says people may still find it through search or the profile.

Must TikTok remove it within 48 hours?

Only in the US, under the TAKE IT DOWN Act, for a valid non-consensual imagery request. The DSA sets no fixed hours, and the UK duties none.

Can I appeal a refusal in the EU?

Yes. The internal complaint stays open at least six months, then a certified body such as Appeals Centre Europe or User Rights can review it.

Does a dispute body force a deletion?

No. Certified bodies cannot impose a binding settlement; platforms must engage in good faith. The courts stay open to you.

The video was AI-generated. Which rule?

TikTok bars using the likeness of private figures without consent, and AI likenesses made to harass. Cite those, not the missing AI label.

Someone Stitched it. Is that covered?

No. A Duet or Stitch is a separate post with its own URL and needs its own report. Search the original sound.

Can someone file for me?

For a US non-consensual imagery request, yes: the Act contemplates a notice from an authorised person acting for the individual depicted.
